SoundCloud announced that it is opening up its direct monetization program to the public, finally giving most artists the ability to make money off of the platform. The program, called SoundCloud Premier, was created four years ago but has been limited to an invite-only beta until now. SoundCloud’s self-monetization move follows Spotify’s recent announcement that it would begin letting indie artists make money off of songs that are self-uploaded to its platform.
As an independent Artist, you can earn money on YouTube by joining the YouTube Partner Program and using ads to generate revenue. While you focus on making music, YouTube matches ads with your channel and the fans who watch your videos. YouTube collects money from the advertisers and sends payments to your AdSense account. Note: In order to be eligible to apply to the YouTube Partner Program, a channel must have 1,000 subscribers and received 4,000 watch hours in the previous 12 months. Learn more.
For a new song or other work, copyright begins at the moment of fixation — when the music and lyrics have been set down on paper, recorded, or stored on a computer. Copyright protects the musician even if the song is never registered with the Copyright Office. Mailing a copy of the work to yourself provides no additional legal protection and is unlikely to prove useful evidence for establishing the date a song was written.
The copyright in the composition is distinct from the copyright in the sound recording. Generally speaking, the sound recording can be thought of as the master — the recorded performance of the composition. When registering a newly published song, the musician should be sure to protect the copyright in the composition separately from the copyright in the sound recording.

Sure, there are genuinely "direct artist platforms" out there like Bandcamp or SoundCloud. They don't require a distributor: set up the artist page, upload your music — and you’re good to go. However, they are just a fraction of the plethora of digital distribution resources, from streaming services of Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Google Play Music, Pandora and Tidal to social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and everything in between. In today's digital environment, a well-oiled tech pipeline is a must to make sure that the release will be available to (1) all your listeners, (2) across all platforms, and (3) on the day of the release.
